A 520d is only a 4 cylinder and on a big diesel car like that.. it just isn't enough. In BMW circles it's widely known that a 530d/535d or 330d/335d will be vastly better than a 320d/520d. It is definitely worth it. A 335d will be equally as quick as your S3 (I think). You could also go for a 435d grand coupe if that interests you..? The BMW 530d was powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel making 265bhp and 620Nm of torque. With the discontinuation, however, the only diesel variant offered with the 5 Series is the 520d which uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder motor producing 190bhp and 400Nm of torque.
