Yeah that'll happen, a good thing to invest in when leveling your character is path finding. It increases map movement speed, so you can outrun enemies and not get captured early. On foot I have great success leading with a shield bash, like how in boxing you fight behind your jab. Shield bash -> overhead stab then turtle up and circle is a very effective method, even against sword and board because they'll try to come in close and stuff your stabs and you just punch em in the fucking face and then stab them in the neck.
Huscarls are the ultimate siege tools, just train up a load and throw them in to combat and watch the defenders crumple. Swadian knights are a good compromise to huscals as mentioned and Rhodok sharpshooters are vital to whittle down defenders. Also if you can, get your self made marshal.
Here are my noob tips: Hit the melee arena in town until you level up a bit. Unless you have some odd mod, the damage you take is temporary, and goes away afterwards. You can also talk to the trainer at any training grounds which gets you extra exp, but the arena is handy, and it gives you some easy cash.
